Sealed Chair

2009

The Sealed Chair was conceived as an artisanal alternative to plastic chairs produced by industrial injection moulding. Drawing inspiration from the iconic bentwood chairs by Thonet, Dumas explored the process of bending plastic by hand.

The chair’s structure is formed from three plastic rods, softened through heating in an oven and shaped around wooden templates. The components are then joined using a welding technique that highlights the melting of the plastic, creating a visible seal that becomes both a structural and aesthetic feature.

This construction method, based on bending and welding, allows each part to work in harmony, stabilising the entire chair while showcasing the material’s tactile qualities and the craftsmanship involved.
