Designer Box is a subscription-based design brand delivering a surprise object each month in a wooden box of fixed dimensions. For Box No. 33, the challenge was to create an original design produced in a series of 3,000 units.
The result: a colourful basket made from EVA foam, designed and produced locally at Krux Amsterdam, a creative workspace co-founded six years earlier. Together with Gero Asmuth, an “amateur engineering” process was developed to meet the demands of scale and time.
A custom laser-cutting program was created to engrave and cut the foam efficiently, paired with a set of assembly tools and workflows—turning production into a precise choreography. This hands-on, low-tech system allowed the team to craft each piece quickly while maintaining consistency and character.
