Knapsack

Kvadrat, Divina textile, 2014

Knapsack emerged from an invitation from Kvadrat to work with their iconic Divina fabric and to reconsider the conventional way of making upholstery. The felted, blanket-like qualities of the Divina textile was the starting point for this settee. The aim was to create a comfortable seat without the need for traditional binding techniques like staples or stitches. François Dumas always has at heart to confine the production to the most simple gesture, one which would enable to replicate the craft in an harmonious and efficient manner. In one motion, the foam and the textile are rolled around a core. As the gesture is repeated and as several logs shapes are formed and put alongside, the seating surface is created. The ends are then sealed, which exempt the need to finish off with seams. The modules are connected using leather belts to tighten the fabric and attach it to an aluminium structure.
