Knapsack

2014

Knapsack was born from an invitation by Kvadrat to explore new possibilities with their iconic Divina fabric—reconsidering the traditional approach to upholstery. Inspired by the textile’s dense, blanket-like quality, the project aimed to create a comfortable settee without relying on conventional techniques such as stitching or stapling.

The construction is guided by a single, fluid gesture: foam and fabric are rolled together around a central core. Repeated, this action produces log-like modules that align to form the seating surface. Once sealed at the ends, there’s no need for seams or additional finishing.

The individual modules are secured with leather belts, both tightening the fabric and fastening it to a minimal aluminium structure. The result is a system that is as efficient and replicable as it is tactile and sculptural—where form follows gesture.
