EVA Light

Limited edition, 2013

EVA Light is a colourful and playful lamp with a soft touch. Created at the same time as the EVA shelf, the idea for this lamp came from the interest in EVA which stands for ethyl vinyl acetate and is a foam material. It is naturally stretchy and has rubber-like qualities. Commonly used to produce flat shapes, the challenge of the project was to process this material into three dimensions. François Dumas was introduced to it through the shoes industry where it’s commonly used for outsoles. He was seduced by its bright colours due to the density of the material and felt a resonance with its personality and universe. He decided to first make several compositions and layer different coloured sheets of EVA on top of each other and cut through it in different ways in order for each sheet’s hue to be revealed. As function follows gesture, Dumas started to see the contours of a lamp. It felt to be the right typology to bring a touch of colour into domestic environments. Foam layers are first glued in a colourful composition before being cut, sanded and assembled into a lamp. The light produced by the led strip reveals the intense contrasts in a hypnotising way.
