Scénographie BIDSE

2019

Commissioned for the main exhibition of the 11th Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, the scenography took inspiration from the event’s theme Designing Common Ground and the traditional Maypole dance, where individuals weave ribbons around a central mast in a collective celebration.

This gesture of gathering and interconnection was translated into space using colourful ribbons woven into arched metal grids. These semi-circular forms served as vibrant, structural backdrops throughout the 1,000 m² exhibition, divided into five thematic zones.

The materials—ribbon and metal—not only conveyed symbolic meaning but also paid homage to Saint-Étienne’s heritage as a historic center of ribbon production and metalwork. Each section featured a unique woven pattern, supporting the exhibition themes while creating a cohesive, immersive environment that celebrated collaboration and local craft.
